The Illumination Problem is a famous problem in geometry, originally posed by Ernst Straus in the 1950s, asking whether a room with perfectly mirrored walls can always be completely illuminated by a single point light source, even after allowing infinitely many reflections.
The problem is closely related to billiard-ball trajectories in rooms of arbitrary shape. In 1958, Roger Penrose showed that the answer is no by constructing a curved-walled “unilluminable room” containing permanently dark regions.
