Johnny Mnemonic is a 1995 cyberpunk action film directed by Robert Longo and written by William Gibson, based on Gibson’s 1981 short story. Set in the dystopian year 2021, the film depicts a world dominated by megacorporations, organized crime and advanced technology, while a technological disease called Nerve Attenuation Syndrome (NAS) spreads among the population. Johnny (Keanu Reeves) is a “mnemonic courier” who transports secret information inside a brain implant, sacrificing his childhood memories to create storage space. After accepting an assignment that exceeds the implant’s capacity, Johnny discovers that the data contains information about a cure for NAS. He is consequently pursued by the Yakuza and the powerful corporation Pharmakom, which wants to prevent the information from becoming public.
Johnny eventually joins forces with Jane, the LoTeks, and the hacker J-Bone, while receiving help from a cybernetic dolphin named Jones and an artificial intelligence connected to Pharmakom’s former CEO. The central conflict revolves around information, corporate power, technology and control, as Pharmakom allegedly possesses a cure but has an economic incentive to keep it from the public. Johnny ultimately manages to decrypt the data and transmit the cure across the Internet, while recovering memories of his childhood. The film was heavily re-edited by its distributor, changing Longo and Gibson’s more ironic and experimental vision into a more conventional action movie; it received largely negative critical reviews upon release but later developed a cult following. In 2022, Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White was released as a re-edit that Longo described as closer to his original artistic vision.
