Henry Billingsley Euclid's Elements

Henry Billingsley (died in 1606) was an English merchant, amateur linguist, and later Lord Mayor of London, but his greatest contribution was in mathematics. In 1570, he published the first complete English translation of Euclid’s Elements, a landmark work titled Elements of Geometrie. For many years, scholars underestimated Billingsley’s role and assumed that others, such as John Dee, had helped write the translation.
However, evidence later showed that Billingsley translated the work himself directly from the original Greek, demonstrating his deep knowledge of mathematics and languages.
