Postcard from Albert Einstein to David Hilbert
#1
The postcard sent by Albert Einstein to David Hilbert on 18 November 1915 highlights the scientific competition between the two mathematicians and physicists as they worked to formulate the field equations of general relativity. Einstein acknowledged that Hilbert had also discovered the correct mathematical foundations for the theory, while emphasizing that the main challenge lay in the physical interpretation of the equations and their relationship to established theories of gravity.

In particular, Einstein noted that Hilbert’s work had not yet clarified the connection between his equations and Newton’s theory of gravitation. The postcard illustrates a crucial moment in the development of general relativity, demonstrating how mathematical formulation and physical interpretation were both essential to establishing a revolutionary scientific theory.
