Illusory contour

Summary


An illusory contour (also called a subjective contour) is a fascinating optical illusion in which our brain perceives clear edges and shapes even though no actual lines or color boundaries exist in the image. One of the best-known examples is the Kanizsa triangle, where strategically placed shapes make us "see" a bright white triangle that is not really drawn. 

This phenomenon demonstrates that vision is an active process: rather than simply recording what reaches the eyes, the brain fills in missing information based on context, experience, and its expectations about how objects normally appear.

 Researchers believe that early visual areas of the brain, particularly the visual cortex, play a key role in constructing these imagined boundaries, making illusory contours an important tool for studying perception, object recognition, and the neural mechanisms of vision. They have also influenced art, graphic design, and even research in computer vision, highlighting how the brain can create a coherent picture from incomplete visual information.
