Summary

A weak derivative is a way of extending the idea of a derivative to functions that may not be smooth enough to differentiate in the usual sense. Instead of looking at the function point by point, mathematicians define the derivative through how the function behaves when integrated against smooth test functions. This allows functions with corners, jumps, or other irregularities to still have a meaningful “derivative” in a broader sense. 

Weak derivatives are a cornerstone of modern analysis and are especially important in the study of partial differential equations, physics, and engineering, where real-world solutions are often not perfectly smooth. In simple terms, the concept lets us work with rough functions almost as if they were differentiable, making many powerful mathematical techniques possible.
