Pigeonhole principle

Summary


The Pigeonhole principle is a simple but powerful idea in mathematics that says if you put more items than there are containers to hold them, at least one container must contain more than one item. In other words, you can’t distribute things perfectly evenly when there’s an imbalance between what you’re placing and where you’re placing it.
 Although it sounds obvious, this principle becomes surprisingly useful in problem-solving and proofs, especially in combinatorics, number theory, and computer science, where it helps show that certain patterns or repetitions must exist even without explicitly finding them. It’s a reminder that hidden structure often emerges just from counting carefully.
