Summary
A new study called First Proof tested several advanced AI systems on ten completely new, research-level mathematics problems that had never appeared online or in training data. While the best AI setup—using multiple models that critique each other—managed to solve about six out of ten problems, every participating human mathematician successfully solved all of them.
The goal of the experiment was to measure genuine reasoning ability rather than pattern matching from memorized data, and it revealed that although AI has made impressive progress and can assist with complex mathematical thinking, top human experts still outperform current systems when it comes to deep, original problem-solving.
