That's exactly what mathematician Joel David Hamkins set out to prove when he visited his daughter's second-grade classroom and introduced seven-year-olds to graph theory, graph coloring, and Eulerian paths. The results were remarkable: with just pencils and paper, the children were doing genuine mathematics.

The session covered concepts like chromatic numbers — the minimum number of colors needed to color a graph so that no two connected points share the same color — as well as map coloring and the famous fact that any flat map can always be colored using at most four colors. From there, the students explored Eulerian paths and circuits, tracing through every edge of a diagram without lifting the pencil or repeating a line, a puzzle rooted in the classic Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem. Far from being overwhelmed, the children created their own graphs and challenged each other, ending the session with a personalized mathematical coloring booklet to take home.

The broader message here is one that educators and parents alike should take to heart: math for kids doesn't have to mean drills and memorization. When abstract ideas are turned into hands-on activities, even the most advanced topics in discrete mathematics become accessible and fun for early learners.
