Ronald Graham was an influential American mathematician widely regarded as one of the founders of modern discrete mathematics. He made major contributions to combinatorics, Ramsey theory, computational geometry, scheduling theory, and computer science, and is perhaps best known for introducing the enormous number called Graham’s number, which arose in a problem in Ramsey theory. Graham spent much of his career at Bell Labs and later became a professor at the University of California, San Diego.
He collaborated extensively with mathematicians such as Paul Erdős and Fan Chung, published hundreds of research papers, co-authored the classic textbook Concrete Mathematics, and served as president of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. Beyond mathematics, he was also an accomplished juggler and trampolinist, making him one of the most distinctive and celebrated mathematical figures of the twentieth century.
