21 Grams (2003)

21 Grams is a 2003 American crime drama/thriller directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. The film follows three people whose lives become connected after a fatal hit-and-run accident: Paul Rivers, a seriously ill mathematics professor awaiting a heart transplant; Cristina Peck, a mother whose husband and children are killed; and Jack Jordan, a former convict whose religious faith is shattered by his responsibility for the accident. Their stories are presented through a nonlinear narrative, jumping between the past, present, and future as the connections between them gradually become clear.

The title “21 Grams” refers to a controversial 1907 experiment by physician Duncan MacDougall, who claimed that people lost approximately 21 grams of body weight at the moment of death, supposedly representing the weight of the soul. The experiment was later regarded by the scientific community as flawed and unreliable, but the idea became culturally famous. In the film, the title therefore functions symbolically, connecting death, the soul, guilt, grief, identity, and the value of human life.

The film received generally favorable critical responses, particularly for its direction, screenplay, and performances, with Naomi Watts and Benicio del Toro receiving Academy Award nominations.[/url]
