Hackers (1995)

Hackers is a 1995 American crime-thriller film directed by Iain Softley, starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, and Fisher Stevens. The story follows Dade Murphy, a teenage hacker known as Zero Cool, who moves to New York and joins a group of young hackers, including Kate “Acid Burn” Libby. Their activities become much more serious when another hacker, The Plague, secretly installs a computer worm designed to steal $25 million from the Ellingson Mineral Corporation. The protagonists are falsely blamed for the scheme and must use their hacking skills, teamwork, and knowledge of computer systems to expose the real criminal before the plan can be completed.

The film was strongly influenced by the hacker subculture, cyberpunk, and the emerging Internet culture of the 1990s. Its depiction of hackers emphasizes curiosity, technological creativity, individual identity, and resistance to conventional authority, while the film's visual style combines futuristic representations of cyberspace with the fashion and electronic music of the era. Although Hackers received mixed critical reviews and performed poorly at the box office when released, it subsequently developed a significant cult following. Its soundtrack, featuring artists such as The Prodigy, Underworld, and Orbital, and its highly stylized portrayal of 1990s hacker culture became important parts of its enduring appeal.
