Elements of AI [University of Helsinki]
#1
Elements of AI is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn that introduces the fundamental ideas behind artificial intelligence without requiring prior programming or advanced mathematics. It explains what AI is and what it can and cannot do, then introduces core concepts such as AI problem-solving, search and game trees, probability and Bayesian reasoning, machine learning, and neural networks. The course combines explanations with interactive exercises and practical examples, making technical ideas accessible to beginners.

A major goal of the course is not simply to teach AI techniques but to help learners think critically about AI and understand its effects on everyday life and society. The final sections discuss topics such as the public perception of AI, limitations of AI systems, and how to evaluate claims and hype surrounding technologies such as artificial general intelligence and the technological singularity. The introductory course currently requires roughly 30 hours of study and is available free of charge; a separate Building AI course goes further into implementing AI algorithms and models.
