Partial Differential Equations [Ivrii]
#1
Victor Ivrii’s Partial Differential Equations is a comprehensive, freely available undergraduate textbook based on the University of Toronto’s APM346 course, introducing the main ideas and techniques of PDEs through both theory and applications. It begins with PDE classification, initial and boundary value problems, and physical motivations, then develops the fundamental wave, heat, and Laplace equations, using characteristic methods, energy arguments, separation of variables, Fourier series and Fourier transforms, eigenvalue problems, Green’s functions, and potential theory.
Later chapters move into more advanced material including variational methods, distributions and weak solutions, nonlinear equations such as Burgers and Navier–Stokes, spectral theory, scattering, conservation laws, Maxwell equations, and quantum-mechanical operators. Throughout, the book combines derivations, examples, applications, and substantial problem sets, making it suitable both as a course text and as a broad reference for learning the classical analytical toolkit of partial differential equations.
