Summary

A cuboid is a three-dimensional geometric solid with six quadrilateral faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices, sharing the same basic structure as a cube but allowing faces that are not necessarily squares. The most familiar type is the rectangular cuboid, also called a rectangular prism, where all faces are rectangles meeting at right angles and opposite faces are equal and parallel. A cube is simply a special case of a rectangular cuboid in which all edges are equal. More generally, cuboids also include shapes such as parallelepipeds and rhombohedra, provided they have the same connectivity as a cube.

 The term cuboid literally means “cube-like,” reflecting its close relationship to the cube while permitting variations in edge lengths and face angles. Cuboids are examples of convex polyhedra, satisfying Euler’s formula (V - E + F = 2), with 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 6 faces. They appear frequently in mathematics, engineering, architecture, and everyday life, modelling common objects such as boxes, books, bricks, and rooms, making them one of the most important and widely studied three-dimensional shapes in geometry.
