How to tame uncertainty

Summary

Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is the branch of mathematics that tries to understand and measure how much uncertainty exists in our predictions and models. Instead of pretending that calculations are perfectly accurate, UQ asks: How reliable is this result, and what could make it change? It is used everywhere—from weather forecasts and climate models to medicine, engineering, and artificial intelligence—because real-world data is always incomplete and measurements are never perfect. 

The idea is not to eliminate uncertainty (which is impossible), but to describe it, control it, and make better decisions while knowing the limits of our knowledge. In a world full of complex systems, UQ gives mathematics a way to be more honest about what we know and what we still need to discover.
