Zebra Puzzle
#1
The Zebra Puzzle is a famous logic puzzle involving five houses arranged in a row. Each house has a different color, nationality, pet, drink, and cigarette brand. Fifteen clues establish relationships among these attributes—for example, the Englishman lives in the red house, the Ukrainian drinks tea, and the green house is immediately to the right of the ivory house. The challenge is to use logical deduction to determine the complete arrangement and answer two questions: Who drinks water, and who owns the zebra?

The puzzle is commonly called Einstein's Puzzle or Einstein's Riddle, although there is no evidence that Albert Einstein created it; the famous version was published in Life International in 1962. Its unique solution identifies the Norwegian as the water drinker and the Japanese as the owner of the zebra.

Beyond being a recreational logic problem, the Zebra Puzzle has become an example of a constraint satisfaction problem, and it has been used to test computer algorithms and, more recently, the logical-reasoning abilities of large language models.
