The popular story claiming Alfred Nobel excluded mathematics because of a personal rivalry with Swedish mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler over a woman is almost certainly false. Instead, historians suggest that Nobel simply chose to create prizes in fields he considered most connected to human benefit and practical discoveries, and mathematics was not among them.
