The Riemann sphere is a fundamental concept in complex analysis that extends the ordinary complex plane by adding a single point at infinity. The Riemann sphere can be visualized as a sphere where every point corresponds to a complex number through stereographic projection, with the north pole representing infinity. This idea creates a natural connection between geometry and complex numbers, making it possible to study functions that would otherwise have problematic behavior at infinity.

Introduced through the work of mathematician Bernhard Riemann, the Riemann sphere plays a central role in complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and topology. It provides a framework for understanding extended complex functions, especially meromorphic functions, which may include poles but remain well-defined on the sphere.
