Pi [1998]

Summary

Directed by Darren Aronofsky in his feature directorial debut, Pi (1998) is a surreal psychological thriller about Max Cohen, a brilliant yet reclusive and paranoid mathematician who believes that all of nature—including the stock market—can be understood through underlying numerical patterns. Operating from his cramped Manhattan apartment while suffering from intense cluster headaches and hallucinations,

Max uses his custom supercomputer to uncover a mysterious 216-digit number that seemingly predicts complex natural phenomena. His discovery draws dangerous pressure from both a ruthless Wall Street firm seeking market manipulation and a group of Hasidic Jews who believe the sequence is a sacred code representing the unspeakable name of God.

As the escalating fixation and severe head pain push him to the brink of insanity, Max ultimately burns the written sequence and performs a desperate, self-inflicted trepanation with a power drill to destroy the pattern in his brain, sacrificing his extraordinary mathematical gifts to finally achieve peace of mind.
