A brief history of algebra

Summary

Algebra has a rich history that spans many civilizations, but its modern foundations were established in the 9th century by the Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, whose book introduced systematic methods for solving equations and gave rise to the word algebra from the Arabic term al-jabr. His work also inspired the concept of algorithms, named after his Latinized surname. 

Although earlier civilizations such as the Babylonians, Greeks, and Indians solved algebraic problems, al-Khwarizmi transformed these ideas into a general mathematical discipline. Over the following centuries, scholars like Omar Khayyam extended algebra by studying cubic equations, while European mathematicians including Fibonacci, Cardano, Tartaglia, and Ferrari developed methods for solving higher-degree equations. 

During the 19th century, Abel and Galois proved that general fifth-degree equations cannot be solved by radicals, leading to the birth of modern abstract algebra and group theory. Around the same time, Gauss established the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, confirming that every polynomial equation has the expected number of complex roots. Together, these breakthroughs transformed algebra from a practical technique for solving equations into one of the most powerful and influential branches of modern mathematics.
