Tony Gardiner , Mathematician, (1947 - 2024)
Tony Gardiner was a highly influential British mathematician and educator best known for transforming mathematics enrichment and competitions in the United Kingdom. A Reader in Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of Birmingham, he founded the Junior and Intermediate Mathematical Challenges and played a central role in establishing the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) in 1996, helping hundreds of thousands of students engage with challenging problem solving.
Beyond mathematics education, he contributed to areas such as group theory, graph theory, and combinatorics, authored numerous books on mathematical problem solving and Olympiad preparation, and received the Paul Erdős Award for his contributions to mathematical competitions. Widely respected for his passion, leadership, and commitment to nurturing young mathematical talent, Gardiner left a lasting legacy on mathematics education in the UK and internationally.
