Maxima

Summary

Maxima is a free and open-source Computer Algebra System (CAS) designed for symbolic and numerical mathematics. It can perform operations such as differentiation, integration, Taylor and Laplace transforms, solving differential and linear equations, polynomial manipulation, matrix and tensor calculations, high-precision arithmetic, and 2D/3D plotting.
Maxima is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with graphical interfaces such as wxMaxima that provide notebook-style interaction and formatted mathematical output.
It is based on the historic Macsyma system developed at MIT in the late 1960s and remains an active open-source project released under the GPL license, offering a powerful alternative to commercial tools like Mathematica and Maple for students, researchers, and educators.
