David Singmaster (1938–2023) was an American-British mathematician, professor at the London South Bank University, and one of the most influential figures in recreational mathematics and puzzle research. He is best known for pioneering the mathematical study of the Rubik’s Cube, creating the widely used Singmaster notation for recording cube moves, and publishing some of the earliest systematic solutions to the puzzle.
Beyond cubing, he made contributions to combinatorial number theory through the famous Singmaster conjecture concerning Pascal’s triangle, amassed one of the world’s largest collections of mathematical puzzles and recreational mathematics books, and devoted much of his career to documenting the history of puzzles and promoting mathematical recreation.
His enthusiasm, scholarship, and extensive writings helped establish the Rubik’s Cube as a serious subject of mathematical study and inspired generations of puzzle enthusiasts and mathematicians.
