Summary

Directed by James Marsh and adapted from Jane Hawking’s memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, The Theory of Everything (2014) is a biographical drama that follows the life and career of renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his relation with his first wife, Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). 

Beginning with their meeting at the University of Cambridge in the early 1960s, the film traces Hawking's diagnosis with motor neurone disease (ALS) at age 21, his rapid physical decline, and his groundbreaking scientific achievements in cosmology—including his bestselling book A Brief History of Time

As the decades progress, the story explores the complex emotional and practical toll the illness takes on their marriage, leading to their eventual amicable divorce and lifelong friendship. The film was a critical and box-office success, earning five Academy Award nominations, with Redmayne winning the Oscar for Best Actor.
