Breaking the Code [1996]

Summary

Breaking the Code (1996) is a BBC television drama directed by Herbert Wise and starring Derek Jacobi as British mathematician Alan Turing, based on Hugh Whitemore’s 1986 play and Andrew Hodges's 1983 biography Alan Turing: The Enigma. The film dramatizes Turing's pioneering work deciphering German Enigma codes at Bletchley Park during World War II and his contributions to early computer science, while exploring the personal toll and societal persecution he faced as a gay man in mid-20th-century Britain, where homosexuality was criminalized.

Broadcast in 1997 on BBC1 and PBS's Masterpiece Theatre, the film was critically acclaimed for Jacobi's poignant lead performance, earning two BAFTA nominations and a GLAAD Media Award nomination for its empathetic portrayal of LGBTQ+ history.
