Pyramidal numbers are a class of figurate numbers that represent stacks of spheres arranged in a pyramid shape, extending the idea of triangular and square numbers into three dimensions. Instead of just counting dots in a flat pattern, they count how many objects can be arranged in a solid pyramid with a polygonal base—like triangular pyramids (tetrahedral numbers) or square pyramids. 

Mathematically, they are built by adding up consecutive polygonal numbers, which gives them a clear layered structure: each new level of the pyramid adds a larger “slice” of points than the one above it. What makes them interesting is that they connect simple counting patterns to spatial thinking, showing how arithmetic progressions naturally grow into geometric forms in higher dimensions.
