Lyx

Summary

LyX is an open-source graphical document processor built on top of the LaTeX typesetting system, designed to combine LaTeX’s professional-quality output with the ease of a word processor. Instead of the traditional WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) model, LyX follows a WYSIWYM (“what you see is what you mean”) approach, allowing users to focus on the structure and content of documents while LyX handles formatting automatically.

It is especially popular among mathematicians, scientists, and academics because it provides powerful equation editing, bibliography management, cross-references, and support for complex documents such as books, theses, and research papers. LyX runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, is distributed under the GNU General Public License, and allows users to create high-quality PDFs without needing to write LaTeX code directly, while still offering access to LaTeX features for advanced users.
