Michael Oser Rabin (1931–2026) was an Israeli computer scientist and mathematician who made foundational contributions to computer science and cryptography. He was co-awarded the prestigious ACM Turing Award in 1976 alongside Dana Scott for their seminal paper on finite automata, which introduced the concept of nondeterministic machines—a cornerstone of computational complexity theory.
Throughout his prolific career at institutions like Harvard University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rabin pioneered randomized algorithms and computer security breakthroughs, creating the highly influential Miller–Rabin primality test, the Rabin-Karp string search algorithm, and the concept of oblivious transfer. For his revolutionary work shaping modern cryptography and computing, he received numerous international accolades, including the Israel Prize, the Dan David Prize, and elections to multiple global academies of science.
