Travelling Salesman (2012) is an intellectual thriller directed and co-written by Timothy Lanzone. The film follows four mathematicians who have solved the famous P versus NP problem, a fundamental question in theoretical computer science. Their breakthrough is potentially transformative because a practical solution to certain NP-complete problems, including the Travelling Salesman Problem, could have consequences for optimization, cryptography, and other computational tasks. The film explores what might happen if such an extraordinary mathematical discovery became real and fell into the hands of governments.
The central conflict begins when the mathematicians meet a senior U.S. Department of Defense official, who offers them $10 million for their part of the algorithm. As they consider whether to accept, they confront questions about scientific responsibility, secrecy, trust, government power, and the ethical consequences of mathematical knowledge.
One mathematician refuses to accept the proposed arrangement and reveals a troubling secret about his contribution, intensifying the group's internal conflict. The film premiered in Philadelphia in June 2012 and later received recognition at the Silicon Valley Film Festival, where it won awards including Best Feature Film.
