The Bank (2001) - mklabgr - 09-28-2026 The Bank (2001) is an Australian thriller and drama directed by Robert Connolly, centered on Jim Doyle, a brilliant but unconventional mathematician who develops software based on fractal geometry and the work of Benoît Mandelbrot to predict movements in the stock market. He is recruited by Simon O'Reily, the ruthless CEO of Centa Bank, who wants to use Doyle's mathematical model to dramatically increase the bank's profits. As Doyle becomes involved with the bank, he also begins a relationship with Michelle Roberts, while becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the bank's greed-driven business practices. The story becomes darker when the bank's lending practices contribute to the financial ruin of the Davis family, and O'Reily pressures Doyle to give false testimony against them. Doyle eventually predicts an imminent stock-market crash, while Michelle discovers that his real identity is Paul Jackson and that his father had committed suicide after the bank terminated his credit. In the climax, Doyle's prediction appears to fail: instead of crashing, the market rises, causing the bank to lose $50 billion and collapse. Doyle disappears overseas, while the Davises unexpectedly discover $727,000 in their bank account—the same amount mentioned at the beginning of the film. FILM |
