Olympiad Man has displaced Davos Man - mklabgr - 09-19-2026 The Economist argues that a new elite is emerging in global capitalism: “Olympiad Man”, the exceptionally talented mathematician, physicist or computer scientist who once might have pursued an academic career but is now being recruited into AI, technology and quantitative finance. International Olympiad winners are disproportionately represented at companies such as Google, Meta, OpenAI and major trading firms, while Olympiad-trained founders have helped create highly valued companies such as Databricks, Cursor, Cognition and Perplexity. The article contrasts this group with the older “Davos Man”—the globally mobile MBA, consultant and corporate executive—arguing that mathematical and computational ability has become an increasingly valuable form of economic capital. The phenomenon also has implications beyond business. Countries and institutions that attract Olympiad-level talent can gain significant advantages in AI, finance and technological innovation, while international migration means that many of these individuals move from countries such as China, India or Romania toward institutions in America and Europe. The Economist notes the irony that a competition originating in the Soviet bloc has become an important mechanism for allocating talent in modern capitalism. At the same time, it raises concerns about the growing distance between this highly specialized technological elite and ordinary society: Olympiad Man may possess extraordinary technical abilities but can be socially isolated and difficult for politicians, investors and the public to understand.
