Global analysis - mklabgr - 09-15-2026 Global analysis, also known as analysis on manifolds, is a branch of mathematics that studies differential equations from a global and geometric/topological perspective. Rather than focusing only on the behavior of a function or equation near a particular point, it investigates how solutions behave across entire manifolds and vector bundles. It makes extensive use of differential geometry, topology, and infinite-dimensional spaces of functions and mappings, making it particularly useful for understanding nonlinear differential equations, singularities, and phenomena described by catastrophe theory. The subject connects several important areas of mathematics, including differential equations, topology, geometry, and the calculus of variations. For example, finding geodesics on Riemannian manifolds can be formulated as a differential-equation or optimization problem. Global analysis also has important applications in physics, especially in dynamical systems and topological quantum field theory. Major topics associated with the field include Morse theory, the Atiyah–Singer index theorem, harmonic maps, and geometric analysis. ARTICLE |
