6.370 Battlecode Programming Competition - mklabgr - 09-15-2026

MIT OpenCourseWare’s 6.370 Battlecode Programming Competition is a four-week undergraduate IAP course built around an artificial-intelligence programming contest. Students work in teams and write Java programs that control virtual robots in Battlecode, a real-time strategy game. Rather than directly controlling the robots during a match, participants design algorithms that determine how their units move, communicate, gather resources, attack opponents, and adapt to changing game situations. The course provides optional lectures covering relevant programming techniques and concepts, while most learning happens through experimentation, debugging, competition, and iterative improvement.

The course is therefore a practical introduction to AI, algorithms, programming, and game design in a highly competitive setting. Students must balance strategic decision-making with computational constraints, develop effective tactics, test them against other teams, and progressively refine their programs.

The experience culminates in a live Battlecode tournament, making the course particularly valuable for learning how theoretical computer-science ideas translate into autonomous systems operating in a dynamic environment.
