A person might write an essay entirely themselves and then ask Claude to improve grammar or style; the resulting text could contain Claude's watermark. Anthropic explicitly acknowledges that its watermark can show only that Claude was probably involved at some stage—it cannot distinguish between original AI generation and substantial AI editing.
