Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) are developing a new type of artificial intelligence that gives machines a better understanding of geometry, allowing them to perceive the world more like a mathematician rather than simply analyzing data points. Led by Professor Paul Atzberger, the team created Geometric Neural Operators (GNOs), AI models based on ideas from differential geometry that can understand shapes, curves, surfaces, and spatial relationships in a more meaningful way.
Unlike traditional AI systems that often struggle with unfamiliar objects or noisy data, these models learn underlying geometric structures and can work reliably with different representations of the same object. The technology could improve applications in engineering, physics, biology, computer-aided design, LIDAR analysis, and scientific simulations, while also making AI systems more transparent and trustworthy by giving them a conceptual framework for understanding the physical world.
