EU aims for seven AI gigafactories - mklabgr - 07-30-2026 EU aims for seven AI gigafactories Summary The European Union has unveiled a €10 billion initiative to build seven AI gigafactories across member states in an effort to narrow the artificial intelligence gap with the United States and China. Expanding its original goal of five facilities due to strong interest from participating countries, the plan aims to create massive AI hubs equipped with advanced processors, cloud infrastructure, high-speed networking, software platforms, and data centers capable of training next-generation AI models. The European Commission also hopes to attract an additional €20 billion in private investment, with technology companies, public institutions, and investors invited to submit proposals by November 12, 2026. Winning projects are expected to be announced in early 2027, with operations beginning roughly 18 months later. Major chip manufacturers, including AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, have already expressed support for the initiative. The gigafactories will complement the EU's existing network of AI factories while strengthening Europe's technological sovereignty, boosting AI research and innovation, and making the continent more competitive in the global AI race.
