X+Y [2014] - mklabgr - 07-30-2026 X+Y [2014] Sumary X+Y (released in the US as A Brilliant Young Mind) is a 2014 British drama film directed by Morgan Matthews that follows Nathan Ellis (played by Asa Butterfield), a teenage math prodigy on the autism spectrum who struggles with social interactions and grieving his father's death. Mentored by a former math genius suffering from multiple sclerosis, Nathan travels to a training camp in Taiwan to compete for a spot in the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad, where he forms a bond with a female Chinese competitor named Zhang Mei that forces him to step outside his comfort zone and learn to navigate complex human emotions like love. Inspired by the 2007 documentary Beautiful Young Minds and loosely based on the real life of math silver-medalist Daniel Lightwing, the film explores how connections with others can help overcome emotional isolation.
