Summary
Directed by John Madden and based on David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play, Proof (2005) is a psychological drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow as Catherine, a troubled young woman who spent years caring for her brilliant but mentally ill father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins), a renowned University of Chicago mathematician. Following Robert's death, Catherine grapples with grief, the overbearing control of her estranged sister Claire (Hope Davis), and her own haunting fear that she may have inherited her father's severe mental illness.
Tensions erupt when Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former student of Robert's studying his remaining notebooks, discovers a groundbreaking mathematical proof in a locked desk drawer; when Catherine claims to have authored the proof herself, Hal and Claire struggle to believe her genius, forcing Catherine to reclaim her identity and overcome her doubts with Hal's eventual support.
