Mathematicians warn of AI threats to profession - mklabgr - 06-05-2026

The Leiden Declaration (June 2, 2026), endorsed by the International Mathematical Union and signed by math department heads from Princeton, Oxford, Stanford, and others, warns that AI threatens mathematics in several key ways:
  • AI could flood the field with plausible but flawed proofs, weaken attribution, shift incentives, and give tech companies too much influence over research priorities.
  • AI companies including DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google Research have poured around $800 million into academic mathematics departments over the past three years.
  • The risks disproportionately affect students and early-career mathematicians, threatening the long-term future of the discipline.
The declaration calls on individual mathematicians to disclose AI tool use, prioritize peer-reviewed venues, and urges policymakers to regulate the AI industry and protect author rights. Physics, chemistry, and biology are seen as facing similar tensions soon.
